How do I insert a citation for an existing source in Word 2007?
I want to insert a citation to a scholarly source in a document. The source
already exists in my bibliography. I can't find a way to create a citation for the existing source. Many thanks. Peter |

Once the source has been created (I assume you're doing this using the
Citations & Bibliography section in the References ribbon tab), choose Insert Citation and click the source in the list. Or are you asking something else? -- Herb Tyson MS MVP http://www.herbtyson.com Author of the Word 2007 Bible Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. How do I insert a citation for an existing source in Word 2007
Herb,
Yes, that helped. But for some reason, when I was clicking INSERT CITATION before, I was only getting the choices about adding a source, adding a placeholder, etc. I was working with several open windows with different chapters of the same book. Perhaps the bibliography is only linked to one of the chapters--that would make sense. Is there a way to attach an existing bibliography to a new and separate document? Many thanks. As you add sources, they are added to the master list and available to all
documents. In a document that doesn't already contain any given source(s), in the References tab, click on Manage Sources. In the left panel (Master List), select the sources you want to use in the current document, then click Copy. This copies them to the right panel (Current List, i.e., the current document). As you cite those sources in the current document, they will sprout checkmarks next to them in the right panel. -- Herb Tyson MS MVP http://www.herbtyson.com Author of the Word 2007 Bible Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. How do I insert a citation for an existing source in Word 2007
Thank you, Herb. While I have you--there is one other problem with my
citations--I am using APA style, so within the text a citation should be (author'sname, year). But one in-test citation keeps including the title of the article as well as the author's name and year of publication. I don't know how this came to happen, and I can't find the way to fix it. I am certainly going to get your book. For that one, does the author's name and that year occur multiple times in
the sources? I've seen what you're describing happen with there's possible confusion about the source (even though you and I aren't confused, Word itself can get confused). I've seen it happen even when the pub. years are different. You can suppress the title for that citation by clicking the citation and dropping down the control on the right side, choose Edit Citation, then then click Title to suppress it. My guess is that--being a new feature--there might still be some glitches and bugs in it. -- Herb Tyson MS MVP http://www.herbtyson.com Author of the Word 2007 Bible Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. Yes, that author is named for several cited sources--the years are both the
same and different--but it only happens with this one citation. Anyway, thank you. You have been a great help. I'm heading to Amazon for your book. Trying to solve puzzles like these on my own is too easy a way to avoid the writing. How do I insert a citation for an existing source in Word 2007
Actually, I have now figured out something else that was making it difficult
to enter/edit citations. I like to work in outline mode, and the edit citation capability is not available there. Having never used it before, when I was looking for a way to edit a citation, I had no idea that it was missing from where it can usually be found. The outline mode may also have had a role in the other anomolies I ran into. I like writing in outline mode because a) I can see more of the text in a window opened to half of screen width (thus letting me open another window that I can also use; and b) it helps me to see where I am in the organization of the material in the chapter. But I guess it can lose or confuse some of the other functions. Actually... you _can_ edit citations while in outline mode. Rather than
looking for the dropdown arrow for the citation container, however, right-click the citation and choose Edit Citation. You also have this option when writing in Page Layout view, as well. (Note that you have additional options as well from the right-click menu, such as Edit Source). -- Herb Tyson MS MVP http://www.herbtyson.com Author of the Word 2007 Bible Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. When I select "turabian" it is not giving me turabian style! What is the
