Default When I save files, getting "duplicate" file with a tilde.

When I save files, particularly Word documents, to a folder, I sometimes get
a duplicate file with a tilde.

For instance, if I save a .doc named "the comfort food cookbook" to a folder
named "Projects", I'll later open the folder and find the original file "the
comfort food cookbook" and another one named "~fort food cookbook". Can
anyone tell me what causes this? Thanks.

This file is the working file that Word automatically creates and
automatically deletes when you either close the file or close the application.
Sometimes when Word crashes these files may not be deleted.
Hope this helps

This is the "owner" or "lock" file that Word automatically creates when you
open a document, to prevent anyone else from opening it for editing. See
"Description of how Word creates temporary files" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 for more.
