What happens when I post on this forum? |
This forum is a mirror of a collection of Usenet newsgroups. Usenet is made up of thousands of news servers all over the world. When you post your message, it is distributed to these news servers where people will connect to their own local news server via a News reader and be able to read your message. Once your message is posted, even if it is deleted from this forum, copies of your message will still exist on other news servers around the world permanently. This distributed posting system is Usenet's main strength however it should be noted that once the post is made it is impossible to ever completely delete it. Be careful when posting personal information to a newsgroup particularly sensitive information such as financial information or home address and phone numbers. |
What is your sites archiving policy? |
Posts sent from this forum are permanently archived by this forum. You have the option to include a header in your posts which indicate your preference to not have your post archived by other Usenet servers. This can be found in your edit profile options. It should be noted that this header is only voluntarily adhered to and not all Usenet servers will honour this.
For messages posted outside of this forum being archived by this forum this header will be honoured and the message will only be displayed for a set number of days at which point it is deleted. Currently, the number of days a post is kept before being deleted is 14. Any post that this applies to will be clearly marked during those 14 days that it will be deleted at the end of this time. |
How do I report an inappropriate post? |
We do not regularly monitor the posts that are sent through these newsgroups. If there are posts you find are spamming, abusive, offensive, or infringe your copyright or intellectual property please use the ‘report as inappropriate’ button which is in the bottom right-hand corner of every post. |
Your e-mail address and Usenet. |
Included in the headers of every message you sent to the newsgroups is an e-mail address. Spammers frequently collect these e-mail addresses and as a result it is sensible not to use your real e-mail address. This forum gives you two options. By default, a unique, time sensitive e-mail address will be used which is only valid for 10 days. Any e-mail received to that e-mail address will be received by you in the form of a private message through this forum. After 10 days any e-mails are automatically deleted and the address is no longer valid. As an alternative, you have the option to set your own ‘munged’ e-mail address. This can be found in your edit profile options together with some advice on how to use it. At no time is the email address which you used to register with this forum ever sent to Usenet. |
What is a moderated newsgroup? What happens when I post to a moderated newsgroup through this forum? |
The vast majority of newsgroups are unmoderated (anyone can post). Those that are moderated are indicated as such in the newsgroup's description. When you post to a moderated newsgroup your post will only appear on this forum and propagate to the rest of Usenet if the moderator approves it. The moderator of the newsgroup is not connected to this forum and the acceptance or not of the post and the timely propagation of that post is entirely up to the newsgroup's moderators. |
