No, it is not possible to remove the US English dictionary because there is
only one English lexicon that contains all the "flavors," which are used
according to your language setting. For tips on setting the language more
firmly, see

aware that language is part of text formatting; if you open a document
created in another language, it brings its formatting with it, and if you
paste in text formatted with a different language (unless you paste as plain
text), it will bring its language with it.

Setting it to English(UK) helps but does not solve all the problems - I am
sure I was able to delete it in Word 2000.
