When clicking on "add" I get to the folder Microsoft/Proof - but no files at
all are available. The pop-up window is totally blank. That's why I really
wonder where the dictionary files are hiding!

OK. I'm looking at Word 2003 (the same version you mention in your first
message). Tools/Options/Spelling and Grammar/Custom Dictionaries. This brings
up the dialog box "Custom Dictionaries".

Try clicking "NEW", enter a name, click "Save". Now you should see the file
name you just created in the list. It will probably appear under a sub-title
"All languages"?
