Windows creates its temporary files at the location set in the registry at
Key Name: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Environment
Class Name: NO CLASS
Value 0
Name: TEMP
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
Value 1
Name: TMP
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
Word creates some of its temporary files in the above location, but the rest
in the working document and template folders. By default Windows hides these
files, but you may have set Windows Explorer to display them. Either way
they are normal and essential to the running of Word. If you save documents
to the desktop (not the best place for them) then you will get temporary
files there too. The only time you need worry is if the temp files are njot
removed when Word closes - see

The security measures you have employed are overkill, unnecessary and will
slow your PC to a crawl. Nor will they protect you from your own folly.

As soon as I open a word document a temp file appears on my desktop,
does anyone know how to fix this problem. I never had it before and
it just started after I somehow lost every picture that I had on my
harddrive and the entire files that they were in. I am running
windows XP behind zonealarm firewall, have triple virus scanners and
triple spyware scanners that I keep updated daily.
