Are there any converters that would let me convert .doc files into XML? I
have never seen an xml document.


The wikipedia article has examples of XML documents. No you can't convert
HTML to XML (not automatically, anyway). XML tags the contents of a document
according to *meaning*, as opposed to HTML which is concerned solely with
format.
