On my computer, as soon as I change the Vertical Alignment to Centre, the
insertion point moves immediately to the centre of the empty page. I
don't
have to enter any text and press enter.

Usually, Space Before is set to 0pt and Space After to 12pts, but it
sounds as though it has changed one or other to a much larger value.
