This worked perfectly - thank you! I hadn't de-selected the styles and
hadn't checked the tables fields. thank you.

When you generated the TOC, did you go to the Options in the Insert
Reference Index & Tables - Table of Contents dialog box, check the box for
TOC Fields *and* clear the Styles checkbox?

If that isn't the problem post back with additional specifics about exactly
what you did and exactly what it rendered - and specify your version of
Word.

I am having great frustration in creating a table of contents in Word 2003.
I want to use my own marked info, not heading styles/levels. I did the
alt-shift-o and with the chapter headings I selected them to be level 1.
All
seemed fine until I went to insert the TOC ˇ© at that point all sorts of
other
things (things not marked by me) showed and the things I marked did not
show.
I tried using the help and instructions but it doesn©öt seem to make sense
to
me for where I am stuck. Any help you can provide would be super!!!!

Thanks.
