In order to use old doc format Word documents Word has to perform a
conversion process to its internal XML format. Any conversion process is
best avoided as much as possible.

Sorry, one thing that I did just think about here.
You write that Word seems happier when you don't convert documents to
compatibility format. Would the program freezing up be a symptom of
the lack of happiness Word has in compatibility format?

It is difficult to track down such a fault from a distance, but I
would start by updating the printer driver (Word 2007 also has some
issues with mouse drivers) - then see

Word 2007 also seems happier when you don't convert documents to
compatibility format. Better to work and save in native format and
save the final draft as 97-2003 format to maintain compatibility.
Set the Document layout properties (bottom of Word Options
Advanced) to use Word 2003 (or earlier) settings

In Compatibility Mode (where I permanently work as all my files must
be compatible with older versions), Word periodically freezes up
during activity -- scrolling, opening menu, etc.
After a few moments of non-responsiveness, the rest of my computer
hangs as well forcing a reboot.
It is unlikely a hardware issue as all diagnostic tests check out
okay and the laptop (2 months old) runs seamlessly with all other
programs.
Please help. I'm extremely frustrated as I spend long hours in Word
and never had problems with my previous version.
