Default what is a chk file

Really nothing to do with Word at all. CHK files are file fragments
created by the disk checking programs CHKDSK or SCANDISK when there
are read errors or bad sectors. You can try to rename them as .JPG
files and see if they'll open, but the odds are that they won't.

You can try one of the tools from
http://www.ericphelps.com/uncheck/index.htm to see if you can recover
anything. If they were text files you might stand a good chance of
getting part or all of the text, but images are likely to be jumbled.
