Default Footers and Printing

The file name and path is displayed via a field, namely the FILENAME field.
In some versions of Word, opening the document updates the FILENAME field,
thus marking the document as changed, which is why you are prompted to save
it.

For more, see this KB article:

Which fields are updated when you open, repaginate, or print document

I enter some footers in documents by clicking "file name and path" in the
footer section. Others I just enter a footer that may not be related to the
file name and path.

When I open a document, make no changes, but print only, those with the file
name and path will ask me if I want to save changes before I can close.
Those without the file name and path do not do this.

Thanks,
