Default Vertical Numbering

You really can't if you use a single list. You can create separate named
lists, but the easiest approach is to use SEQ fields. Use a different
identifier for each column. If you want the numbering to be continuous, you
will need to include a start value in the field in the first row of each
column after the first. Note that SEQ fields don't update automatically as
auto numbering does, but you can select the table and F9 to update all the
fields.
