What you describe sounds like the way Word displays bookmarks. Try going to
Tools Options View (or in Word 2007, Office button Word Options Advanced
Show document content) and, if the Bookmarks option is checked, uncheck it.
If they are bookmarks, they won't print even if they're visible on screen.
