You should modify your template, yes. However, using a custom template is
usually a better idea than modifying Normal.dotm, because header/footer
content may interfere with label printing I believe.
As far as the field updating is concerned, note that FILENAME fields do not
update automatically in recent versions of Word. This was a design change a
few versions back. You can force an update by switching to Print Preview
(Ctrl+F2) and then back to the previous view (ESC), or you can use a macro
to update all fields in the document. For the macro approach, see the
example at
