It sounds like the formatting marks for spaces is turned on continuously. In Word 2007, 2010, 2013, do the following: Click the "Office Button" in the top-left corner. (This looks like a circle around a four-color Microsoft logo.)
This opens a window with a "Word Options" button on the lower-right side. Press it.
Click the "Display" option in the left-hand column.
Uncheck the checkbox for "Spaces" in the "Always Show these formatting marks on the screen" section.
You are done!
