It occurred to me that these files were created years apart--some with
versions much older than Word 2003. That is the only possible explanation I
can think of for why some open with the XE codes displaying and why some open
without the XE codes displaying.

I don't know the answer either. I know that Word automatically displays
Hidden text every time you insert an XE field. I generally work with Hidden
text and other nonprinting characters displayed, so it doesn't surprise me
when documents open with XE fields displayed, but if Word is doing this even
when you don't have Hidden text displayed in the window you're opening from,
then I guess it's something Word does automatically, though I have no
explanation for why it would not do so consistently.

Yes, they are XE field codes.
I don't have "Make hidden markup visible when opening or saving" checked
on
the Security tab of Tools | Options.
The strange thing is that some files open with the XE codes visible and
some
do not.
That is why I am baffled.

Does your document contain XE or TC fields? If so, I think it will
always
open with Hidden text displayed, certainly if you have "Make hidden
markup
visible when opening or saving" checked on the Security tab of Tools |
Options.

When I deselect the Hidden Text check box (Tools/Options/View) in my
Word
files (to not display hidden text), save the document, close, and
re-open
the
document, the check box is once again selected. I have tried deleting
my
normal.dot, but this did not fix the problem. I have also tried
detaching
the old template the file was associated to. I have also made sure
that
the
Print Hidden Text check box is not selected.
Note that not all of my files open with the Hidden Text check box
selected.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
