Default Word refuses to unbold TOC 3 style

Hi Robert,

Thanks for taking a crack at this.
No, the bold is not being applied by direct formatting.

I tried to just start fresh making a new style, TOC 6 to pair with
heading 3 text, and this weird "refuse to unbold" issue is there.

I'm using field codes to generate the TOC right now as follows:

{ TOC \h \z \t "Heading 1,1, Heading 2,2, Heading 3,3, Heading 9,5 }
(the heading 9 I'm using for the appendix)

So for this experiment, I used
{ TOC \h \z \t "Heading 1,1, Heading 2,2, Heading 3,6, Heading 9,5 }

For what it's worth, when I highlight the TOC 3 text , the regular
toolbar doesn't show it as being bold, but if I click the bold button
in the toolbar once, it unbolds the leader and page number and if I
click it a second time, the text, leader and page numbers are all
unbolded, but of course that only lasts until I update the table again.

Hi, I have a document in which it seems completely impossible to make
the TOC 3 style unbold. Here's what I've tried and learned:

1. TOC 3 is based on TOC 2, which is itself not a bolded style.
2. When I go to the Modify Style dialog box for TOC 3 and make it bold
(the B icon is not selected when I open the style), the text will
unbold, but the next time I update the TOC, it goes back to being bold.
3. When I go to Reveal Formatting for that style, it claims that for
Latin, Asian and Complex fonts it is bold, yet when I go to modify it
(click "Format" button and select "Font") it shows as regular.
4. The TOC 3 and TOC 2 styles in my document have no numbering
involved, so it's not a question of the numbering being bolded. They
are all set to "none."
5. When I see the preview of TOC in the Styles and Formatting pane it
appears as not boldface (go figure!)

Weird: the style itself should certainly not change when the TOC is
updated, hmmm ... Is it possible that the corresponding headings that
are picked up by the TOC are bold not from their style but from direct
formatting? Word would pick this up and show you a bold TOC entry (or,
if the TOC style is bold, too, it will revert back to not-bold -- this
works as a toggle) ...

2cents
