If each chapter is a separate section (and only a single section), you can
tell Word to put the notes at the end of the section rather than at the end
of the book, restarting the numbers in each section. If you want them all
collected at the end of the book, then you just need to restart the
numbering in each section (if you selected "End of document" for each
separate chapter, then you will get the same for the combined file). You can
insert a paragraph at the beginning of the notes for each chapter (press
Enter at the beginning of the first endnote for the chapter) to add a
"Chapter x" title.
