For Word 2007, click on the border of the text box so that just it is
selected (without it being enclosed in a dotted outline) and then press
delete (or in Word 2003, the border will be surrounded by a band of dots
rather than a hashed band)

If the textbox toolbar does not appear, select Toolbars from the View menu
and then check the Text Box item.
