Default Word 2000 support and updates

You're correct about the support situation. It's described at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...-us;lifeOffice.

It isn't particularly easy to collect and download the updates, but
it's possible.

Go to the Office Update page, most easily by going into Word and
clicking Help Office On the Web, then clicking Check for Updates on
two consecutive web pages.

The update checker will confirm that your Office is already fully
patched, or offer you the latest. In the left column, click "Show
already installed Office updates". You'll get a long list of updates.
Under each one, click the link for "Show description"; in the
description, click the link for "More information". A second browser
window will open to the download page for that update.

For each one, first make a note of its release date, the KB article
number that describes the update, and the security bulletin number if
any. By checking these articles, you can find out which updates
include other updates. For example, Office 2000 Service Pack 3
includes all previous service packs. When you know that you need an
update, click the Download button on its page and save the file to
your hard drive. Later you can transfer it to a memory stick or burn
it to a CD.

Each of these files is an executable (.exe). After you install the
base release from the original CD, select each update in release-date
order and double-click its icon in Windows Explorer to apply it.

Like many on here, I am using Word 2000 on W98SE, which I'm very happy
with. I presume that on the same lines as the W98 policy, Microsoft
will eventually withdraw any support for Word 2000. What I want to do
is to get now the various updates for Word 2000 (which are of coures
already applied to mine) and dowload and save them as files on eg memory
stick. Then if in the future I ever need to replace/reformat my hard
disk, and restore from my (old) Word 2000 CDs, I can then apply the
updates. Can anyone help with a blow-by-blow account for this newbie, on

1) how to download the updates without actually aplpplying them (as they
are already applied to the current files.

And then 2) how to actually apply them to a newly copied over (old) CD
if/when the time ever comes.

Also, a little request. Could posters always say (preferably in the
title) what version of Word they are referring to?

TIA.
