I am having the same problem. I have saved "normal.dot" in "templates," where
it redirects me when I try to follow the instructions, but it will never let
me open normal.dot. I have been trying to figure this out forever, and I just
found this forum. I have enabled hidden files. If you could help me, that'd
be great.

To display hidden files and folders, start Windows Explorer and click on
Tools | Folder Options | View | click the "Show hidden files and
folders" radio button | OK. Then in Word, click on File | Open, browse
to the folder designated for User Templates, and open Normal.dot.

I followed your instructions but when I try to open "User Templates" nothing
appears, and when I typed in Normal.dot a message came up saying-- it wasn't
accessible or the title contains '/' or '\'. If its a hidden file how can I
access it?

Yes. In Word, click on Tools | Options | File Locations, and note the
folder for "User Templates". That is where your Normal.dot global
template will be located. Normal.dot is a hidden file in Word 2002 and
2003. Open your Normal.dot file, change the columns to One, type one or
two characters and then delete what you just typed, and save and close
your Normal.dot file.

I have the same problem as Jordan. Is it possible to set my columns to
default to one instead of having to reset it each time?
