Default How to number an existing outline

On the Home tab, click on the arrow next to the Multilevel List button in
the Paragraph group, and then click on the pane that shows the numbering you
want. Once you have applied it, you can go back and use Define New
Multilevel List to refine the numbering at any level or to link the levels
to different styles.

Have you tried applying the I, A, 1 scheme from the multilevel list
dialog?
By default, this is linked to the built-in heading styles.

In Windows Word 2007, in "out line view," I constructed an outline. I'm
unable to add a typical out line number scheme, such as

I
A
B
II
A
B
C

Thanks much

.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, but I'm still wandering
around. Could you give me the sequence of key strokes

Thanks much
