Somehow I think you're not getting it. You set up the outline numbering
linked to specific styles; then you apply those styles to the paragraphs you
want to have the numbering.

Thanks much for the additional instructions. However, I remember how
easy
it was to construct an outline in an earlier version of Windows Word,
most likely
the 2003 version. Is it possible to down load the 2003 version, in
which
case I will have both versions on my HP Pavilion desk top ( 64 bit )

I went to viewoutline and constructed an outline of five level 1
entries.
Each of these entries had a number of subordinate entries. I then went to
the multi-level list on the home tab. There I was able to assign letters A
to
E for the level ones. But I had to do it one at a time. I was unable to
assign a numerical designations for my level two's as I had intended.
