Default Difference between File extension DOC and DOCX

Possibly its author set the 'docx' document as read only. Save it under a
different name as a regular document. You will be able to edit that copy.

I received an attached document with a DOC extension. No problems opening
it and making changes in Word 2007.
I also received an attached document with a DOCX extension. Could open it
in Word 2007 but could not make any changes.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.
