I produced a document containing some mathematical formulae using Microsoft
Equation 3.0.

Some formulae have fractions in them and I am unable to make use 'bold' to
embolden them?

The equation editor that Microsoft licenses from MathType doesn't support any font formatting. You might need to purchase the full MathType application if you need this.
