Apparently you have yet to discover the Task Pane. Activate its Reveal
Formatting panel, click in or select some text and find out everything you
need to know... in Plain English, *not* cryptic codes that take half your
lifespan to learn to interpret, let alone modify successfully.

What you are actually finding is that Word is *different*, which does not
necessarily mean *worse* -- and this comes from a
WordStar--WordPerfect--Word convert who's tried about 10 other wp programs
along the way.

Word's method of showing what the format is for a section leaves much to be
desired and actually makes correcting problems difficult in some
circumstances. Word Perfect's method of showing the formatting in the actual
document, upon request, makes finding and correcting the problems very easy.
I am using Word 2003 and have found unprompted format changes to be a
problem. Trying to fix the changes is cumbersome and sometimes almost
impossible with Word's system. In WordPerfect, the problems are visible (in
the location where they arise and at a glance) with just the click of one
button.
