Default how do i remove blank lines in mail merge address labels

I am using word 2003 to do a address labels using mail merge. My data source
is in an excel spread sheet. The problem is that some of the addresses
contain a 2nd line for apt# and some don't? when the merge is complete it
leaves blank lines if there is noothing in the field. How can I get the merge
to reconize that is a field is empty and does not need a space?
