Define the paragraph numbers as explained at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html.
Then insert a TOC or, if your document already has a TOC field,
update it to display the modified headings. For more, see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html.
However, Word's built-in TOC features do not allow you to choose the
position of the paragraph numbers. In particular, you cannot replace
the page numbers with paragraph numbers. To accomplish this, you would
have to create your TOC manually, inserting cross-references to
heading numbers and text.

I cannot find a way to insert paragraph numbers into a doucment
which 3-tier
TOC headings already in place?
Is there any way to insert paragraph numbers in the right hand
column so
each paragraph has its own convenient reference, instead of having a
TOC
heading for every para in the left-hand margin?
Ideally this could be X.1, X.2, X.3 etc where X = the level 1 TOC
heading
for each chapter.
Thanks
