Default Border fills more than one table cell

I'm designing a manual form, using a table that I will write data on
appropriate lines. It's a one page table at this point and I've done a lot
of manipulating of cells, i.e. combining, adjusting right and left borders,
splitting, line heights etc.

I want to put a simple bottom border in the cell or cells where I will write
the data, usually to the right of the information label. Sometimes, when I
want to put this bottom border in just one cell, the bottom border extends to
more than one cell, even though just one cell was selected (thanks for the
earlier tip on selecting the cell BTW). In this specific case, the cell I
wanted to put the bottom border in was a cell on the right edge of the table.
I selected the cell, and clicked the bottom border on the borders button.
Theh bottom border was put in the proper cell, as well as two or three cells
to the left.

Other times, when I select one cell, the bottom border appears in just the
one cell I selected. I'm definately using the bottom border as opposed to
the underline formatting button.

Any ideas as to why this would be the case? Because I've made so many
adjustments to the table, I can't determine whether the cells were combined
or split, etc., which could have an effect on the outcome of putting a bottom
border in a cell.

Your help is sincerely appreciated.
