Default print layout view

I'm using Office 2000 with all the service packs and updates
installed. I'm using the normal.dot template to create a document.
The template has not been modified or changed. When I open and view
a document in the normal view, the document is displayed correctly on
the screen. When I change to the print layout view, the document is
displayed with grid lines similar to graph paper. The image grid
lines looks like a background but does not print on the document.
The image is only displayed in the print layout view. I've replaced
the template with a known good template file but the problem remains.
The other views, web layout and outline seem do display the document
image correctly.

How do I correct this problem?

Display the Drawing toolbar. Click the Draw button at the left, select Grid,
and uncheck the box for "Display gridlines on screen".

This setting is stored in the registry, not in a template.
