without selecting any text.

Please help! I have three problems when trying to apply styles to
paragraphs:
1. When I apply a paragraph format style to text, it will change to that
style, but in the format window it will list it as "Normal + Ariel +
etc...."
instead of listing it as my saved style that I applied. Therefore, if I
make
a change to my saved style, this text won't update.
2. Sometimes I apply a new style and nothing happens. It remains the
current
style.
3. If I managed to clear the style and get it to the default Normal style,
then I am usually able to apply my desired style. HOWEVER, I keep running
into this problem:
When I clear a style, it doesn't go back to the default Normal style. It
will go back to the "Normal + centered" or whatever the alignment
currently
is. This means I am back to my number 1. and 2. problems!
