It's possible that just Ctrl+Q on the headings and F9 on the TOC would have

I actually solved the problem shortly after posting by blanking out the
font, font style, and size that were shown so that nothing was selected.
I
then cleared the formatting on the actual headings in the text and
reapplied
the correct heading style. Finally, I regenerated the ToC and that
cleared
the bold number in the ToC. Whew!
