Default Font Storage

I have downloaded well over 1000 fonts from the internet. My problem
is that Word (and Publisher, etc. - actually the Fonts Folder in
Settings) won't let me have more than about 125 of them installed at
the same time. I would like to know if there is any way to increase
the maximum number of fonts which can be installed, and if there is
any way to create organization (besides alphabetical) in the drop
down list for when I choose a font. For instance, is there some way
to create a sub-list or sub-folder of installed fonts into which I
could put just my Dingfonts, another for fancy capitals, etc. ?

The first question is, what version of Windows are you running? Windows 95
and, to a lesser extent, Windows 98 have trouble with large numbers of
fonts, but Windows 2000 and later shouldn't have these problems.

Although large numbers of fonts can seriously slow Word -- especially if you
have the dropdown list set to display the names in their respective fonts --
you should be able to keep a couple of hundred fonts loaded, not just 125.

Some things to check out are listed at

To organize the fonts, you need third-party software. Ask Google about "font
manager". There are many such programs, both commercial and freeware.
Popular ones include Typograf (http://www.neuber.com/typograph/), Printer's
Apprentice (http://www.loseyourmind.com/), FontLister
(http://www.theill.com/fl/default.asp), and MyFonts
(http://www.mytools.com/myfonts.html). Typically, these programs let you
group fonts by similarity or by project type, and dynamically load and
unload fonts.
