The first question is, what version of Windows are you running? Windows 95
and, to a lesser extent, Windows 98 have trouble with large numbers of
fonts, but Windows 2000 and later shouldn't have these problems.

Although large numbers of fonts can seriously slow Word -- especially if you
have the dropdown list set to display the names in their respective fonts --
you should be able to keep a couple of hundred fonts loaded, not just 125.

To organize the fonts, you need third-party software. Ask Google about "font
manager". There are many such programs, both commercial and freeware.
Popular ones include Typograf (http://www.neuber.com/typograph/), Printer's
Apprentice (http://www.loseyourmind.com/), FontLister
(http://www.theill.com/fl/default.asp), and MyFonts
(http://www.mytools.com/myfonts.html). Typically, these programs let you
group fonts by similarity or by project type, and dynamically load and
unload fonts.
