Default save changes prompt disappeared from Word

When closing a Word document, the absence of the prompt to save changes to
the document (as opposed to changes in the underlying template) most often
indicates:

a) Corrupted Word registry entries

b) Corrupted Windows user profile

c) The presence of a virus of some kind. Because a/v programs are so
prevalent, we hardly ever see this as a virus issue anymore.

A large number of Word problems are related to a) and b). The article here,
its name notwithstanding, can help you begin to troubleshoot the issue to
find a resolution:

On the Save tab of Tools | Options, make sure you have "Prompt to save the
Normal template" checked.
