Default 'Tables'- 2 columns,4 rows. Can you merge one column into 3 rows?

Sort of.

What doesn't work: Merge four cells then split into three (Word gives you a
choice of two or four).

What does work: Split each of the four cells into three. Then select groups
of four cells and merge.
