the equation editor and press Crtl-z to get the contents of the equation

Is there a way to get round this problem?

Try using .doc or, if you have it, .docx format. I prefer .rtf myself
but I know from experience that when things like tables and graphics
etc are involved the files can get HUGE. This may be the source of the
problem that you're having with the equation editor.

Thank you for your reply. I've tried saving the document in doc format but
the problem persists (although the filesize is much smaller). I've also
tried pasting a single equation into a blank document. When I save it in doc
format the file size is 11kb but again the problem persists. I'm able change
the font and fontsize of the equation ok, but when I double click the
equation to edit it, I get the error message.
