Default Unwanted underline across cell

Send me a snippet if you like. Be sure to describe the problem in the cover
email, as I'll probably have forgotten what you're on about.

So it appears. I've tried everything I can think of, though.

I readhttp://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm,
which doesn't seem to apply to me. Certain tables have all the cells
"underlined". That is, a horizontal line extends across the bottom of
the cell, slight above the border, and going almost completely from
left border to right border (there are small gaps between the line and
the borders). It extends beyond the boxy dot that shows the end of
the cell content. Borders for the cell and table have been turned
off, so that doesn't explain it. If I apply a paragraph style that
has no underlining and no borders, it doesn't remove the underline.
If I reveal formatting with the insertion point in the cell, Paragraph
section has a lines called "Borders:", which says "(Single solid line,
Auto, 0.5 pt)". When I click on "Borders:", there are no borders
turned on. I turn on a few and then turn them off with "None". This
still doesn't make the line go away.

What is this line, and how can it be removed?

Thanks!
