See The FILENAME field does not automatically update when you open a
document in Word 2002 or Word 2003 at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832897. You could add an AutoOpen macro
to Normal.dot that would update all fields at open, or a SaveAs macro that
would update fields when saving a file under a new name.

Word 2003 used to update the filename and path in the footer when closing
the new document.
It no longer does and one has to remember to manually uipdate it using the
"update field" command.
Any solutions ??
