Default Excell File will not display fields

When I go to select the workbook(excel) for the merge....the selected file
does not
appear in the next window. I have tried re-saving the workbook with a
different name and selecting it again and still it doesn't show the fields
available in that
next little window that opens up. If the workbook(excel) is saved with
protection....how do I turn that off?
