Default Problem with Side-by-Side Viewing

Well, I started in Safe Mode, and it worked fine, so I restarted as usual,
and it didn't work. I thought that an add-in I'd created for Word 2007 might
be the problem, so I disabled that. No joy. Then I noticed that the
Side-by-Side toolbar had a button labeled Reset Window Position, so I
clicked that, and all was copacetic.

That fix seems to persist even when I close and restart Word. I suspect I
may have gotten things out of whack when I rearranged the windows that had
opened split vertically instead of horizontally. I still don't know what
caused that, but presumably the Reset Window Position button would have
worked then, too.

This has started to happen to me just recently. I'm wondering if a recent
update may have broken this feature.

Actually, I just tried this again, and both the documents to be compared
stayed maximized and weren't displayed together at all. The only
indication
of a change was the Close Side by Side toolbar in both windows.

Yeah, that just happened to me! I downloaded some sort of Windows XP
update and some sort of Office update, but nothing Word-specific.

When I get a chance I'll reboot Windows and Word and see if that solves
the
problem. If not, I'll start Word in Safe Mode and see if it works there.
Beyond that, I don't know what to suggest.

When I click on the side-by-side viewing of two documents, my documents
display top/bottom rather than left/right. Do I need to change a setting
somewhere to make the documents display side-by-side?
