Default end note question

No one knows (or at least no one has ever told us) why endnotes are, by
default, numbered with lowercase roman numerals. As has been pointed out,
you can change the number style for a given document, but this is one
instance when modifying the Normal template makes sense. Assuming you will
*never* want endnotes numbered with roman numerals, open Normal.dot or
Normal.dotm (following the instructions for finding it at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...ocNotBlank.htm) and make the
change there; this will affect new documents based on Normal (but not
documents based on any other template).

I placed two end notes into a document. They appear under the "numbers" "i"
and "ii." How can I get them to appear as regular numbers: "1" and "2."?
And why in the world would the default be with those other characters?
Thanks.
