Default change the layout of the selected text to two column?

If there is text above and below the selected text, Word takes care of
inserting the two Continuous breaks. There is, however, a Compatibility
Option that affects whether columns above a Continuous break are balanced.

The clever bit is to get the columns of equal length. In Word97 that
requires a 'continuous section break' at the end of the part with
the two columns, can't answer for later versions.
