You *can* do it, but it won't really help. You can set tab stops in the
Footnote Text style and insert tab characters at the end of the first one or
two footnotes you want to be on a line; then format their paragraph marks as
Hidden. Unfortunately, Word still allows as much space for the footnotes as
if they were stacked, so you gain nothing.
