Default size of footnote area while hiding paragraph marks

Hi
I have a document which contains a lot of footnotes on every page. Each
footnote consists of 2-3 words maximum. I was looking for a way to reduce
the blank space to the right of the footnotes, since every footnote starts on
a new line. What I did is hide the paragraph mark at the end of footnotes
1&2, 4&5, 7&8 etc. (and adding tabs for good formatting) to have groups of
three footnotes on a single line. The method worked, but I found that the
footnote area doesn't shrink while hiding the text. The separator remains in
its place whether text is hidden (leaving a big blank section at the bottom
of the page) or not. Is there a workaround for this, or a better way to group
footnotes?
