Default How do make lists align on the period?

When using tabs, you can use a decimal tab. When using auto numbering, you
can set the number alignment as right rather than left.

Word 2003: When learning to type, I was taught to offset mumbered lists

and
outlines so that the periods remained aligned rregardless of the number of
chacters. In a list of 15, numbers 1 -9 would be one space in from the
margin. Can you teach Word to do this rather than the truly tacky default
that just shoves everything to the right?
