i am using office 2003 and in word the language setting keep changing from
english UK to english US while i work so i have to repeatedly change it back
this is a real annoyance and is time consuming

The root cause is usually having (or having had at Word installation)
incorrect regional settings on the computer. You also need to turn off the
automatic language detection, and replace your Normal.dot which is probably
set to US English.
