Default how do i turn off the research feature initiated by alt click?

alt/click in word used to only apply to vertical highlighting of text. now
in 2003, alt/click also brings up a window titled 'research' that i can not
find a way to turn off, and does not allow vertical highlighting. i know i
can also use ctrl/shift f8 and the arrow keys to do a vertical highlight, but
when i am trying to vertically highlight text on 62 pages, it takes a long
time to scroll thru to the bottom of 62 pages. all i need is a way to turn
off the research feature/pane. thanks.

I don't have any problem using Alt+drag to column-select. The trick is not
to "click." Press the mouse firmly and do not let up on it quickly.

thank you, waiting to release the mouse button does seem to work! but why
did microsoft assign two features to alt/click? just doesn't make any sense
to me, and having to slow down in this 'pentium 4' world is tough!! thanks
again for your help.

Click and drag are different actions.
