I am trying to create a heading style so that following text begins on the
same line, but I am baffled. I see no way to suppress the carriage return. I want: Heading 4: Following text not Heading 4: Following text |

What I am trying to do is set up a heading style which format repeated
instances similarly. The very interesting article indicates how to change formating manually for each instance. Any further guidance? I'm sorry, but I don't understand where you're seeing the "formatting
manually". Suzanne's article tells you how to apply two styles adjacent paragraphs and make them appear to be one paragraph. If you're asking about a single style that will automatically combine the two styles, that's not possible. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit.
