hi all,
wxp pro sp2, office 2003 sp2, i am in the process of finishing a documents 700+ pages all told now. two things beginning to happen of late that i think i am right to be worried about and seek advice from you all experts/experience users. 1. very frequently, and i am talking at least once every couple of minutes my document would grind to a halt while a message of word repaginating appear at the bottom left corner of word 2003's windows. from googling and searching this site, i know this is bad news esp. when i tried the usual remedy of htm'ing and reconvert to word .doc did not work (a sing of corrupted document). the other remedy of copying paragraph by paragraph to a new document has not been tried yet. i have to decide whether i am so near to the end that i should put up with it. my question is aside from the time penalty, if i persisted using this document what could happen? 2. i keep getting very frequent pop-ups of spelling and grammar unable to be completed because there were too many of them. there aren't many. many of these are technical terms, expressions. is there a way to switch spelling/grammar check temporarily off for this document? or is this another sign of a corrupt document? thank you for your advice/help. jes |

just an update.
all work grind to a halt now. problem 2 had become severe. every single keystroke that i typed induces "there are too many spelling or grammatical errors..." pop-up message. i have unchecked automatic spelling and grammar check under Tools - Spelling as well as the tab under Language - Set Language. i tried to copy/paste to a new document with the same results. would appreciate help and advice regarding how to salvage the document. the document is not lost but further work is impossible with the pop-up appearing every single key stroke. would appreciate advice and help what to do next regarding saving and resuming the work. thank you, jes |

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on this, but I've had a similar
problem with corruption, so I'll do my best: 1. The spell/grammar checker you can turn off. Go to Tools-- Options, under the spelling/grammar tab, uncheck the boxes that say "check spelling/grammar as you type". 2. when you copied it into a new document, you went paragraph by paragraph, but did you take the paragraph markers? Most of the corruption hides in the end of paragraph markers, and especially the last paragraph marker of your document. So you need to take the text but not these markers to minimize your chances of copying the corruption into a new document. See this for more information: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm Hope this helps! Is the message literally correct? That is, if you have "Check spelling as
you type" turned on, is it finding a lot of "errors"? If so, and if these are not really errors but just text in a language Word doesn't recognize (and this could include computer code or a lot of proper names or whatever), then there are several tacks you could take: 1. If you're quite confident of your spelling ability (or the "errors" are so numerous as to make it impossible to see any legitimately marked errors anyway), just select the entire document, go to Tools | Language | Set Language, and check the box for "Do not check spelling or grammar." 2. If the "errors" are confined to identifiable strings of text (code or names), define a character style that is Default Paragraph Font + Do not check spelling or grammar. Apply this style to the text you don't want proofed. 3. As a temporary fix, you can use "Hide spelling/grammatic errors in this document." This allows you to run the spelling checker manually (using F7), but suppresses display of errors in a specific document without requiring you to turn "Check spelling/grammar as you type" off for the entire application. -- Suzanne S. ![]() hi Jen and Suzanne, thank you for your replies. Jen, thanks for the link, so happened i read this earlier prior to my posting because it did not help me to solve my problem. i have also switch off the grammar/spell checker as you suggested. i have also hide spelling/grammar checkers as suggested by suzanne. but here's what's odd. i copy/paste using paste special unformatted & reapplies headings, captions & cross-references. the only exceptions were tables and figures. now in spite of this, those message still pop-up albeit less frequently (though i have not completely copied everything)! but still made work next to impossible to resume. on the other hand, copying paragraph by paragraph had gotten rid of repagination occurences (i.e. it hasn't occur yet so far). and this was with spell/grammar checkers hide and turned off. so i am not sure what is going on here and the worse thing is it is happening at a critical juncture where i am almost finishing. left only (possibly just another week's worth of input, then i need to generate TOC, then it'll be off for consultations. i am just wondering whether there is something embedded in some of the tables (almagamation of mine plus two of my collaborators). if i choose copy tables and paste special - unformatted, tables were destroyed (of course i could recreate the tables but this means substantial time delay that needs to be added to the work because there were 90+ tables to re-create). however when i used reveal codes as well as suzanne's earlier suggestion of alt+F9 to show hidden field codes, they did not show-up anything out of the ordinary. woudl appreciate further suggestions. i am thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling office now not for any particular reason other than it is another thing that i can try do in the meantime. thank youi all again, jes |

dear all,
an update... tried the reconsitiuted document on a different machine but with word 2003 installed. slightly different result i.e. initially i am able to do some work but after about 20 - 30 mins or so, the dreaded errors came through again... so, decided to add to dictionary every single word that cropped up as error and correct every single highlighted grammar concern. it was a slow process due to interruptions from the pop-up messages of spelling errors but so far these steps seemed to have somehow corrected the situation. i am able to resume with my work. i have closed, re-open my document a few times now (on either machine), and it seems to be ok, finger-crossed. however, i am still no closer to understanding why these happened. till next time, jes |
